The Anderson Abruzzo International Balloon Museum Foundation (AAIBMF) is announcing several key leadership transitions. After 17 years of service, Laurie Magovern will transition from her position as Executive Director, effective March 14, 2025. In addition, Misty Carty, Membership and Grant Manager, will also be departing the Foundation. To ensure a smooth transition, the AAIBMF Board of Directors has appointed Missy Anderson as Interim Executive Director.
Laurie Magovern began her journey at the Balloon Museum as Curator of Education and later served as Executive Director of the Balloon Museum Foundation. An educator and event planner at heart, over the years, Laurie helped bring thousands of people to the Balloon Museum through creative educational programming and large-scale fundraising events. Laurie helped strengthen the endeavors of the Balloon Museum Foundation and fostered strong relationships. She championed the dreams of the museum’s founders, supporters, and visitors, developing impactful programs and helped highlight the Museum’s unique role in the Albuquerque ballooning community.
“The Board of Directors joins me in expressing our sincere appreciation for Laurie’s 17 years of service,” said Peter Cuneo, Board Chair of the AAIBMF. “Her contributions have been remarkable, and while we are sad to see her go, we are incredibly proud of her and excited for her future endeavors.”
The Foundation also announces the departure of Misty Carty, Membership and Grant Manager. During her time, Misty achieved significant grant successes, including a $50,000 grant from the NM Tourism Department, “Destination Forward Grant,” for the Museum’s theater renovation and programming, and a Sandia Foundation grant to supplement funds for the Flying Bus scholarships. Misty also helped the Museum Membership program take shape with more members and more programming.
The AAIBMF Board of Directors has formed a Transition Team that will manage the search for a permanent Executive Director. The Transition Team will develop a comprehensive search strategy and oversee the succession and the search process. Resumes and cover letters are being received at careers@balloonmuseum.com.
The Balloon Museum Foundation Board of Directors and staff are a strong team, well-positioned for continuity. In the interim, the Foundation is committed to a positive and seamless change. The AAIBMF Board of Directors is grateful for the contributions of the departing leaders and confident in the team’s ability to ensure a smooth transition and continued success for the Balloon Museum Foundation and its mission.
